Prospective Applicants

The GI Training Program at the University of Pittsburgh is rigorous and selective. Residents interested in gastroenterology as a career are asked to consider the following criteria before applying to a competitive academic gastroenterology fellowship program like the one operating here at the University of Pittsburgh:Clinical training excellence will be required, with special emphasis on achievements during the residency experience.

  • Strong academic interests should be demonstrated. Preferred research experiences include bench research, clinical investigations or epidemiological research, but educational research is acceptable as well.
  • Strong letters of recommendation will be helpful, so candidates should select physician writers carefully. At least one of these letters should be written by a gastroenterologist or hepatologist.
  • Candidates are encouraged to review the qualifications and research interests of current gastroenterology fellows and compare current fellows’ achievements to their own experiences.
