Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program

Why Train in Geriatrics at UPMC?

Faculty in the Division of Geriatrics

    • We are home to more than two dozen outstanding geriatricians
    • More than half of us have postdoctoral degrees
    • Many have also trained in complementary subspecialties such as neurology, cardiology, rheumatology, endocrinology, biomedical informatics, palliative medicine, and pulmonary and critical care
    • Many faculty are national leaders in areas ranging from geroscience to geriatric subspecialties and syndromes, medical direction, health care equity and models of care
    • Read more about what our faculty have achieved during the COVID-19 pandemic in our FY20 Annual Report

UPMC Health System Excellence

    • UPMC is the nation’s largest integrated academic health system, encompassing >40 academic, community, and specialty hospitals, and insuring over 4.25 million members (>175,000 members over age 65)
    • UPMC Graduate Medical Education is the nation’s fourth-largest training program, coordinating over 150 training programs, and is a national leader in resident and fellow wellness.

Breadth and Quality of Clinical Training Sites

    • Our fellows train in three acute care roles: as consultants at a Level 1 trauma center, as geriatric hospitalists, and as part of the longest running community-based Hospital Elder Life (HELP) Program in the country
    • Our division provides medical direction for three skilled nursing facilities, helps manage more than two dozen long-term care facilities in Pennsylvania, and partners with four Program for All-Inclusive Care of the Elderly (PACE) sites
    • Fellows who train at UPMC become expert primary care geriatricians through longitudinal experiences in one of our outpatient geriatrics clinics: Benedum Geriatric Center at Montefiore Hospital or the Senior Care Institute at Shadyside Hospital
    • Through the VA/GRECC programs, fellows interact with multiple interprofessional learners in their outpatient consultation, GEM unit, home-based care, teledementia, and musculoskeletal rotations
    • Our core didactic series is integrated with UPMC’s renowned geriatric psychiatry program
    • In partnership with the Alzheimer Disease Research Center and geriatric psychiatry, we are opening a multidisciplinary Center of Excellence in dementia care in 2022
    • Fellows receive intensive training in end-of-life communication from faculty who created VitalTalk in our nationally known UPMC Palliative and Supportive Institute
Academic Training at University of Pittsburgh and UPMC

    • The University of Pittsburgh ranks #5 nationally in research funding; aging-related research is conducted at every one of Pitt’s graduate schools
    • The University of Pittsburgh Institute for Clinical Research Education offers multiple degree opportunities in medical education and clinical and translational research
    • The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, located on our Oakland Campus, is the base for several prestigious VA Centers of Excellence, including our Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) and the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP)
    • The Division of Geriatrics has multiple sources of funding to support further training for those interested in academic careers, including our T32 training grant, VA Special Fellowship, and Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center
