Internal Medicine Residency
All UPMC Presbyterian, Shadyside, and Mercy Internal Medicine residents complete a month-long geriatrics experience. This rotation allows the residents to gain experience in caring for geriatric patients in an acute care setting, in both a primary care and consultative role, as well as in nursing home, home-based, and outpatient care settings.
Internal Medicine Residency – Geriatrics Track
In addition, the Internal Medicine Residency Programs offers an innovative Geriatrics Track, directed by Dr. Rollin Wright. The Geriatrics Track allows 5-9 residents to “major” in geriatrics, gaining a comprehensive clinical experience rooted in geriatric medicine.
Dr. Wright has recently expanded the program by creating four advanced geriatrics rotations available to both Track and non-Track residents, considerably enhancing Track participation. These rotations require residents to care for panels of patients in both home-based and long-term care settings, offering the residents the opportunity for in-depth care experiences that they may otherwise not encounter. The program also requires the residents’ attendance at a weekly lecture that addresses topics specific to the complex issues of geriatric care.
Dr. Wright’s innovations within the Geriatrics Track have also included a Track “Roadmap,” milestones, and pharmacology quality initiative projects. These features have earned recognition at American Geriatrics Society (AGS) meetings and are being emulated at other institutions.
