The Geriatrics Division has developed programs and instituted several Quality Initiatives uniquely tailored for seniors to ensure excellent care upon presentation to the Emergency Department (ED).
- In 2015, the ED at Magee-Women’s Hospital, led by Division Faculty, Drs. Suyama and Chang, became one of just two programs in the nation selected to work with leaders from the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society of Academic Emergency Physicians. The goal of this collaboration is to improve the care of older adults who present to the ED.
- Repeated quality initiative cycles have improved nurse-administered screening of all older adults from 33% to 65% and the rate of physician confirmatory testing to 63%.
- UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital now screens for delirium in every older patient in the ED.
