Effective September 1, 2026, Eric Dueweke, MD, MBA, will assume the role of Vice Chair for Clinical Operations for the Department of Medicine. Since joining the Department’s leadership team in 2025, Dueweke has worked across divisions and with UPMC clinical and administrative leaders to address complex operational challenges and strengthen the Department’s clinical enterprise.
Dr. Dueweke joined the faculty of the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in 2014 after completing his fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at UPMC. He served as Site Chief at UPMC Northwest for five years before returning to Pittsburgh in 2019. Throughout his career, he has held a range of operational leadership positions within the Heart and Vascular Institute and UPMC Health System. Most recently, he served as Medical Director of Care Pathways and Diagnostic Governance, leading efforts to develop the infrastructure needed to govern clinical content at scale and support the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care across the organization.
In 2025, Dr. Dueweke joined the Department of Medicine leadership team as Associate Vice Chair of Inpatient Medicine and Standardization. In that role, he has worked closely with clinical and administrative leaders to strengthen partnerships between the Department of Medicine and UPMC hospitals throughout Allegheny County and beyond, while ensuring that the Department strategically benefits from innovation across the health system.
His work has fostered greater alignment between the Department and UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside leadership teams and advanced initiatives focused on improving key operational metrics, including length of stay. He has also partnered with divisions across the Department to address complex clinical and operational challenges, including the deployment of novel therapeutics, expansion of telemedicine services, and preparation for major system initiatives such as Bridges and the UPMC Presbyterian Kamin Tower.
As Vice Chair for Clinical Operations, Dr. Dueweke will oversee the clinical operations of the Department of Medicine in partnership with the Executive Administrator. He will help shape the strategic vision of the Department’s clinical enterprise, ensuring that patients across the UPMC community continue to benefit from the expertise and innovation of a world-class academic Department of Medicine.
Dr. Dueweke will also work closely with division leadership to develop sustainable budgets that support continued growth and, in collaboration with the Clinical Associate Vice Chairs, will help advance priorities related to operations, quality, and patient experience across the Department.
“Dr. Dueweke’s collaborative leadership style, operational expertise, and commitment to excellence make him exceptionally well-suited for this role,” said Anne Marie Lennon, Jack D. Myers Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine. “We are excited for the impact he will continue to have in advancing the Department’s mission and strengthening our clinical enterprise.”
Continuing a strong tradition of clinical leadership
The Department also extends its sincere gratitude to Michael Donahoe, MD, who has served as Executive Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs for many years. Dr. Donahoe has provided exceptional leadership during a period of considerable growth and change, playing an instrumental role in advancing the Department’s clinical mission.
Dr. Donahoe will continue to serve in a key clinical leadership capacity as Senior Advisor to the Chair for Clinical Strategy. In this role, he will draw on his extensive experience, institutional knowledge, and leadership to help shape the Department’s clinical strategy and priorities.
The Department of Medicine congratulates Dr. Dueweke on his appointment and looks forward to his continued contributions to the Department’s clinical enterprise.
