Continuing the University of Pittsburgh Department of Medicine’s longstanding commitment to supporting clinician investigators, the Department is thrilled to announce that two of our faculty have recently been recognized for their research efforts by leading physician scientist organizations.

Melanie Königshoff, MD, PhD, ATSF, a Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, was inducted this April into The American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI). One of the top honor societies of physician-scientists, the ASCI honors investigators who have made landmark discoveries in biomedical research to help translate findings in the laboratory or advance clinical practice. Election to the ASCI is highly competitive, a great honor, and viewed as a milestone in any scholar’s academic career. For the 2023 Active and International membership nomination cycle, the ASCI Council considered 285 nominations and recommended 100 nominees (the maximum), including Dr. Königshoff, for election.

Stephen Chan, MD, PhD, FAHA, a Professor in the Division of Cardiology and Director of the Vascular Medicine Institute, was inducted this April into the Association of American Physicians (AAP). An honorary medical society founded in 1885, the AAP promotes “the advancement of scientific and practical medicine.” Election to the AAP is limited each year to 70 physicians with outstanding credentials in basic or translational biomedical research.

Congratulations to both Drs. Königshoff and Chan on their exceptional achievements as physician scientists!
