Fellowships in General Internal Medicine

Fellowship Tracks

Whether a fellow is in the Clinician-Educator (ACES) or Clinician-Researcher fellowship program, they have the opportunity to focus on a specific area of interest, or a “track.” These specialty areas include, but are not necessarily limited to the following:

Women’s Health Track

This track, led by Deborah DiNardo, MD, MS , was one of the first women’s health fellowships initially offered through the Pittsburgh VA Healthcare System in 1994. This track aims to develop academic physicians with an interest in women’s health research and education. Depending on their career trajectory, fellows in the women’s health track may participate in either the ACES Fellowship or the Clinician-Researcher Fellowship. Clinical duties are carried out through the Pittsburgh VA Comprehensive Women’s Center, a twice-designated VA National Clinical Center of Excellence.

Medicine-Pediatrics

The University of Pittsburgh offers a combined medicine-pediatrics fellowship track designed specifically for dual-trained individuals who want to enhance their academic training and develop skills in teaching, research, and leadership. Fellows in the medicine-pediatrics track may participate in either the ACES Fellowship or the Clinician-Researcher Fellowship. Clinical and teaching activities occur in both general medicine and pediatric settings.

Hospital Medicine

The goal of the hospital medicine track, led by Allison DeKosky, MD, is to train physician leaders, educators, and researchers in providing excellent and comprehensive inpatient care. The curriculum is designed to provide hands-on experiences in inpatient care, training in medical education and research, and opportunities to learn quality improvement techniques and to develop a focus on research and education in one area of inpatient care.
