Karin Byers Serves on Panel Convened by Infectious Disease Society of America

Karin Byers MD MS, the Clinical Director in the University of Pittsburgh’s Division of Infectious Diseases, was one of 10 experts on a panel convened by the Infectious Diseases Society of America to write guidelines for the diagnosis and management of health-care associated meningitis, ventriculitis and neurosurgical device infections.

Hospital-acquired infections of the central nervous system differ from those that are acquired in the community in how they present, how the diagnosis is made, and which pathogens are significant. Treatment options for these patients are also different from community acquired infections. The Infectious Diseases Society of America convened the expert panel to provide guidelines on how to assess and treat these types of hospital-acquired infections. Pitt’s Division of Infectious Disease wrote about the guidelines on its ID Pitt Stop blog.
