Infectious Diseases Fellowship

Welcome from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Infectious Diseases training fellowship program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. We are excited that you are considering training with us.

In the past decade, multiple infectious diseases have changed our world: the largest Ebola outbreak in history in West Africa, the spread of Zika virus and the discovery of its devastating effect on fetal neural tissue, and of course the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. In addition, there is a continued increase in antimicrobial resistance and the ongoing global HIV epidemic. In short, infectious diseases represent some of the most important challenges facing the world. Our mission is to train the next generation of physicians to address these and future challenges.

Our ACGME accredited program features an individualized curriculum that allows for advanced training in areas that are most important to each fellow and will prepare them for a successful career. We foster an environment that promotes independent growth for fellows along a pathway to gain the skills and experience for a fulling career in infectious diseases.

Thanks to a large faculty with diverse clinical and research interests, we offer mentorship in clinical research, and in basic and translational research on viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogens, host-pathogen interactions, innovative antimicrobial therapeutics, and genomic epidemiology. In addition, we offer specialized training in antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control, transplant infectious diseases, and HIV care.

Our clinical training includes a balance of general infectious diseases along subspecialty training in infections in immunocompromised populations (solid organ transplant, stem cell transplant/CAR-T, HIV/AIDS), complex orthopedic and neurosurgical infections, tele-infectious diseases, and endovascular infections. UPMC is a world-renowned tertiary care with a large variety of complex and specialty care, allowing for both breadth and depth of clinical training.

Please explore our program and reach out to us with questions. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
