Clinical Interest
Dr. Van Deusen's clinical interests are in general internal medicine-pediatrics, with a focus in the field of pediatric-to-adult transitions. He is passionate about being a primary care physician with a clinical niche in caring for adults with pediatric-onset conditions. Pediatricians from across the region refer their special-needs patients to him as they become too old to be cared for in a pediatric setting. Dr. Van Deusen takes great joy in caring for these patients who often struggle to find adult providers comfortable enough to care for them.
Educational Interest
Dr. Van Deusen is passionate about teaching and, in particular, he finds great joy in teaching doctor-patient communication skills to learners. He serves as the Course Director for Medical Interviewing, which is a course taken by the first-year medical students in which they hone their interpersonal communication skills.

From 2009 to 2016, Dr. Van Deusen served as the Associate Program Director of the Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program. In that role, he was responsible for the outpatient curriculum for the residents.

In February of 2016, Dr. Van Deusen became the Medical Director of the Standardized Patient Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In this role, he oversees the aspects of the curricula that use standardized patients for teaching and/or testing clinical skills.
