Dr. Rothenberger’s statistical interests include time series methods, state-space modeling, functional data analysis, the analysis of functional correlations,methods for analyzing ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data, analysis of administrative/claims/EHR data, observational data methods, and the analysis of correlated data. Soon after joining the Center for Research on Health Care (CRHC) Data Center as a statistician, he developed a strong interest in the design, analysis and coordination of clinical trials. He hasc ollaborated on studies in areas such as pregnancy care, mood and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, sleep medicine, chronobiology, obesity, periprosthetic joint infection, and polycystic kidney disease (PKD). He collaborated as a biostatistician for the Data Coordinating Center (DCC) for the HALT-PKD Network and is currently the lead statistician on a NHLBI-funded multisite clinical trial comparing treatments to reduce menorrhagia in women with von Willebrand disease. Additionally, he is a co-investigator on a NIMH-funded clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a blended care model for the treatment of heart failure and co-morbid depression.
He also enjoys working with clinician educators and recipients of DGIM awards, serving on thesis and doctoral committees, and serving as the lead biostatistician for the Clinical and Translational Science (CTS) Scholar’s (KL2) and Fellowship (TL1) programs offered by the Institute for Clinical Research Education and CTSI at the University of Pittsburgh. Currently, Dr. Rothenberger provides biostatistical support to nine KL2 scholars, virtually all of whom he has collaborated with in some way. He is also the statistical “concierge” for twenty TL1 fellows.
