Fellowships in General Internal Medicine

The University of Pittsburgh Division of General Internal Medicine contains two distinct Fellowship programs—one designed for clinician-educators, and the other for clinician-researchers, covering the two major career paths for academic generalists. Both are nationally prominent, competitive two-year programs designed to prepare future leaders and innovators in academic general internal medicine.

Academic Clinician-Educator Scholars (ACES) Fellowship – This fellowship trains future leaders in medical education, and features an integrated program of observed teaching experiences that enhance fellows’ skills in classroom and clinical instruction, curriculum development, professional leadership, medical education, and medical administration. ACES Fellows earn a Master of Science (MS) in Medical Education, which is offered by the Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE).

Clinician-Researcher Fellowship – This fellowship is intended for individuals wishing to pursue a career in clinical research, and provides the skills and experiences necessary to develop, execute, interpret, and secure funding for clinical and health services research studies. The foundation of this track is the Master of Science in Clinical Research Program, which is offered by the Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE).

Whether in the Clinician-Researcher Fellowship or the Academic Clinician-Educator Scholars (ACES) Fellowship, trainees have the opportunity to focus on a specific content area, or “track.” These Fellowship Tracks (Women’s Health, Medicine-Pediatrics, and Hospital Medicine) apply to both Fellowship Programs.

Our DGIM Fellowship Programs hold an outstanding record of training accomplished leaders in research and education.

  • 87% of our 67 graduates from the past 20 years and 95% of our 39 graduates from the past decade remain in academic medicine.

Our graduates hold positions at well-respected institutions all over the country. Among them are:

  • department chairs and vice chairs
