Academic Geriatricians

UPMC / UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH

Join us and help to re-invent the future of geriatric care. Designated by the John A. Hartford Foundation as a National Center of Excellence, the University of Pittsburgh has one of the nation's largest geriatrics divisions, with more than two dozen geriatricians who practice with more than a dozen geriatric psychiatrists. The University is ranked among the nation's top 10 in NIH funding (currently 5th), while its health system is ranked in the nation's topmost clinical tier by US News and World Report and the
Geriatrics Division is ranked 8th. In addition, Pittsburgh has been named "America's Best Arts City," "Most Liveable City," and "Best Urban Adventure
City," and it remains one of the nation's most affordable and best places to live.

Geriatricians work in the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) – a large health system that provides innovative opportunities for geriatricians with interests in every setting. For instance, in acute care, we are "gerontifying" an entire hospital. At another hospital we are working to prevent problems in newly-admitted patients. In ambulatory care, we are among the first to have developed a geriatric Medical Home, which is also NCQA-certified. And in long-term care, we developed the first trigger tool endorsed by IHI and are now working to prevent problems through use of a real-time
alert system designed for dissemination. Our program also includes a national Geriatric Pharmacotherapy Center of Excellence, four PACE sites, home care, a dozen skilled nursing facilities, and CCRC's integrated into UPMC's continuum of Geriatric care, as well as roles in UPMC Health Plan which serves 100,000 seniors.

Ample educational opportunities are available as well. The division provides innovative geriatric education to trainees at all levels, including teaching in every year of the
medical school, required rotations for residents in internal medicine and other disciplines, a fellowship program in geriatric medicine, and an award-winning CME program. Opportunities also abound for clinician-educators to collaborate on research projects and numerous quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

We seek academic geriatricians interested in acute care, including one to direct our care across settings. Come join a Division of colleagues who have a passion for patient care, quality improvement, and scholarly activity.
